Week of October 1, 2008
We returned from our September trip to Yellowstone Park two days ago. It was one of the best fishing months in the Park that I can remember. We had enough wet cool weather that brought on Red Quill and Baetis hatches on the Lamar River, Slough Creek and Soda Butte. Many days were warm and sunny, but fish responded very well to hopper patterns and big “Its”. The “It” came about when a client asked me about a very large non insect looking attractor and asked “What is it?” Any large fly that does not resemble an insect in our box now is called an “It”. Nymph droppers from a hopper or an It fly caught some really nice cutthroat, cutbows and rainbows. Our largest rainbow was 24 inches and the largest cutthroat measured 22 inches. If you might be interested in this trip for next year we are already taking bookings. The trips are 3-5 days in length. The June trip emanates from West Yellowstone and the September trip from Silver Gate in the N.E. corner of the Park.
Big Wood River
The Big Wood is low and clear. Best fishing can be had with a zebra midge, black, red, or olive, hung from an attractor fly with about 18-24 inches of 6X flurocarbon. There are still some tricos spinning mid day, which will sometimes get the fish looking up. Hoppers are still around. With the weather change predicted for the weekend, expect some Red Quills and baetis to show. The sunny weather has stalled those fall hatches.
